Buang Jones

Buang Jones is a renowned human rights lawyer and attorney with Buang Jones Attorneys Inc. in Johannesburg, South Africa. Before practicing for his own account, he was the Head of the South African Human Rights Commission in Gauteng.

Buang holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in corporate law from the University of South Africa and a certificate in Management Development Programme from the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). He is an accredited mediator and an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa with over 13 years post-admission experience.

Buang is best known for his role as the Evidence Leader in the National Investigative Hearing into the 2021 July Unrest, and the Inquiry into Racial Discrimination or Discrimination in Advertising in South Africa. He was the Chairperson of Public Inquiries into the Vaal River Pollution; the State of the City of Tshwane Rivers and Roodeplaat Dam; Racial Discrimination, Harassment, Sexism and Victimisation at UNISA; Racial Profiling by Medical Aid Schemes; Inequality in Eldorado Park and Surrounding Areas and Disruption at Klipspruit West Secondary School; and the Socio-economic Conditions in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg. In November 2019, he was shortlisted and interviewed by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development for the position of the Deputy Public Protector of South Africa.

During his time at the Commission, Buang put human rights at the centre of matters and played an exemplary role in promoting and defending human rights. His presence in many publicised matters was the signature of human rights intervention at a time when human rights were taking a back seat in South Africa.

He has handled several high-profile cases and has supervised high impact litigation matters and facilitated dispute resolution sessions. Buang has dealt with matters which can be described today as public interest cases. As an accredited mediator and a fiercely independent human rights defender, Buang has devoted his life to fighting against unfair discrimination and continues to advocate for equal justice and sustainable development.

His areas of expertise are human rights law, dispute resolution, corporate law, constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law and investigations.
